Jon Speelman, himself a keen endgame composer, has written this study with the needs of the average club or tournament player very much in mind.  Part 1 deals succinctly with the main types of ending: pawns, rooks, bishops of opposite colour, minor pieces, queen and centre pawn v queen, pieces against pawns.  Part 2 shows, by means of specific examples, the limits of analysis and Part 3 provides a range of practical examples from recent international play.  Throughout he emphasises the importance of understanding and approach rather than the mere memorising of past positions and their solution.

With this book, Jon Speelman shows that he has joined the select band of top players who can write instructively about the game in an original and readable manner.
